Charleston, South Carolina, is a remarkable city in a number of noteworthy ways. It is the county seat of Charleston County, the largest city in the state, the oldest city in the state, and the principal city in the Charleston-Summerville Metro Area. Sitting on an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean known as Charleston Harbor, the city is just south of the midpoint of the state’s gorgeous coastline. Home to roughly 135,000 residents, Charleston is well-known for its hospitality, exceptional restaurants, well-preserved architecture, and distinguished history. It has earned a long list of impressive accolades and recognitions throughout the years, including being named the nation’s friendliest city and the world’s best city.
Charleston is comprised of six distinct districts, Downtown, West Ashley, Johns Island, James Island, Cainhoy Peninsula, and Daniel Island. Downtown Charleston is sometimes called The Peninsula, and it is located at the center of the city, separated by the Cooper River on the east and the Ashley River on the west. Also bordering the Ashley River, west of Downtown, the West Ashley district is a residential area bordered by the Stono River on the west. Johns Island is bound by the Stono River on the east, Wadmalaw Island on the west, and the Kiawah River on the south. James Island is situated between the Town of Folly Beach and Downtown Charleston, and is a popular residential area that encompasses McLeod Plantation. The district known as Cainhoy Peninsula is sandwiched between Nowell Creek on the east and the Wando River on the west at the far eastern edge of Charleston. And last but not least, Daniel Island is a rapidly growing residential district situated east of the Cooper River, west of the Wando River, and north of Downtown Charleston.
Each of Charleston’s distinct districts offers its own unique advantages and amenities, while the city at large is full of fantastic opportunities for entertainment, recreation, shopping, and dining. Each district and the smaller communities found within them also provides varied real estate options. Homes for sale in Charleston include everything from condos, apartment, townhomes, and modest single-family homes, to large and luxurious estates, including gated, golf, and waterfront homes.
